Sylvana Ross, a grad student at Cornell, presented her talk July 30 regarding her ongoing doctoral research examining in part how past racial segregation in housing, or redlining, has altered house ants’ genetics across urban and rural neighborhoods.

The talk was titled “Evolution in the City: Racism’s Influence on Urban Wildlife Adaptations.”

Ross’ research illustrates a growing trend within evolutionary biology highlighted at a recent conference that focused considerable attention on diversity, equity and inclusion, with scholars arguing more needs to be done to infuse “justice” and “belonging” into the field and presenting research to that end.

Ross’ research was presented at the Joint Congress on Evolutionary Biology in late July, which brought together the American Society of Naturalists, European Society for Evolutionary Biology, Society of Systematic Biologists, and Society for the Study of Evolution.

It’s described as “one of the premiere international opportunities for sharing research on evolutionary biology.”

In addition to standard workshops on scientific publishing and grant writing and presentations on topics such as adaptive epigenetics, bioinformatics, speciation, and molecular evolution, the third annual conference played host to much DEI fare, highlighting the embrace within STEM of widespread diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. A hate crime hoax is anything considered criminal or at least an act of misconduct. This number also includes questionable hate incidents that have yet to be solved. The 2023-24 school year saw a mix of hate crime hoaxes and other situations that do not neatly fit into a narrative about racism on college campuses.

It can also be a hoax when there is no path forward for the investigation to end but there’s also no clear evidence indicating the act was an intentional hate crime.

Some hate crime allegations have clearly fallen apart. […]

A new research project, “Milking it: colonialism, heritage and everyday engagement with dairy,” comes out of the University of Oxford’s History of Science Museum.

Leading the project are JC Niala, head researcher of the museum, and Johanna Zetterström Sharp, associate professor of archaeology at the University College London, according to an announcement on the museum’s Facebook page.

Their goal is to “examine the milk-related collections of the History of Science Museum to understand scientific knowledge production and the impact of colonial legacies on contemporary issues,” the announcement states. […]

According to The Daily Californian, the reparations would consist of “harm reports, curricula changes and financial payments,” the latter of which would come from donations, increased taxes, and lawsuits against entities “whose historical actions have decreased funding” for the district.

The harm reports would include the “impacts of segregation, discriminatory policies and legacies of chattel slavery within BUSD.”

A parcel or real estate tax was recommended to help pay the reparations — via a “citizen-led initiative” which would require a simple majority for passage. […]

The university’s four campuses have been working with donors to revise scholarships that exclude white students, and in some cases Latinos, Asians, and Native Americans, to ensure they comply with federal law.

“Several of the donors in question spoke with Inside Higher Ed , some on the record, some on background for fear of jeopardizing ongoing discussions with the university,” the news outlet reported. “They said the conversations have been fraught, coercive and disappointing.”“Several said they felt ‘betrayed’ by their erstwhile institutional partners, though many conceded that the university system was in a difficult political and legal position,” Inside Higher Ed reported .The decision to revise scholarships came after the affirmative action decision last summer. However, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of […]

“The gay lobby makes sure everyone knows Junes is ‘Pride Month,’ but they certainly won’t acknowledge the many people who have left the LGBT identity behind. That’s why the Ruth Institute is declaring the first Sunday of June to be Ex-Gay Visibility Day,” stated Jennifer Roback Morse, founder and president of the Ruth Institute, in a news release .

The institute is a nonprofit interfaith organization that refutes the tenets of the sexual revolution and advances testimonials and scientific studies upholding the traditional Christian values of marriage, family, and human sexuality. […]

This past week’s Twitter spat featuring several Washington Post employees was a gold mine into the mindset of the ultra-therapeutic “me” culture which is often cultivated in our universities.

In a nutshell , after Post reporter Felicia Somnez publicly ripped her employer for allowing fellow reporter Dave Weigel to allegedly get away with retweeting a “sexist” tweet, the paper ended up suspending Weigel for a month without pay.

This happened around the same time that ultra-narcissistic Post tech reporter Taylor Lorenz once again was involved in controversy, this time involving accusations she lied about contacting sources for one of her stories.
