My suspicions on the Maine shooter:

He was a member of the US military.

He once threatened to shoot up a military base.

He was sanctioned and sent to a psychiatric ward for observation, he could have been medicated there and programmed to follow orders.

In spite of him being a danger and threatening to shoot up the base he was not discharged from the military and he was allowed to keep his guns.

He was recently fitted with high power hearing aids and he claimed he was hearing voices, his family told him he wasn’t.

Maybe he WAS hearing voices, maybe the hearing aids were also receiving devices through which his controllers could give him instructions.

After his release from psychiatric treatment he went on the shooting spree with guns that should have been confiscated and then he fled.

They found him dead in the woods, original story said 2 bullets in the head, follow-up said self-inflicted, I never heard of anyone committing suicide by firing a second shot into their head after the first one hit.

I know a guy who hears voices talking about him as well. He also knows what street they live, and calls it radio-disturbing. He’s not a tech savy guy though. Lots of above lines I recognize in him, except he isn’t violent as of yet. If he’s, he’s it in the house with his voice. Sometimes he opens his kitchen door towards outside and communicate with them and set things straight (I think in order to not loose his mind). So, he proclaims his truth to them. That keeps the balance in check, I think.
He once told me that his mom said to him that he shouldn’t listen to these voices. His age is towards 70, his mom has died long ago.
On the article. If this guy developed schizophrenia in later age, that might explain why he wanted to get rid of himself. Because he knew of a better time. And after his deed he may have gotten aware of what state he got into.

If some reports I read were accurate — that Card was a career Army Reserve guy — that is odd given that he exhibited recent bouts of schizophrenia as late–life–schizophrenia occurring for the first time are almost unheard of?!
