They wasted their income earning years and were not prudent with their money. They did not plan for retirement but rather left it in the hands of government. Social security from the onset was never intended to be the sole source of retirement income. But many retirees use it that way! Whose fault is that? Nobody but theirs. If they would have saved during the economic booms, spent less, wasted less and invested a bit more they would have enough today… all it takes is $100/month when you start working in your 20’s… you don’t have to invest very much to have money in retirement.
