Take notice of what necessities you purchase and use daily, and stock up on those items. Underwear, medical supplies, soap and detergent, needles and thread,, etc. Learn new skills if you have time – EMT, sewing, welding, etc. All hands on production of useful goods. Start a garden, even if only containers in your patio. Make friends with your neighbors. If possible, get out of the city. Get a weapon and ammo and train on it. Get in shape so you can walk or run away from a bad situation. Learn to cook from scratch.

Your money will become worth less and less, so buy both survival items (food, water storage and filtration, medicines, esp. prescriptions, trade goods – things you can trade for what you need, perhaps some gold or silver – but be aware the gov’t. can make owning it illegal. You can actually do without toilet paper – there are alternatives, though it will be an adjustment. Store as much gasoline as you can, use a preservative, store it safely.
Solar panels and an inverter to run refrigeration – forget A/C. Don’t forget self defense items: pepper spray, knives, firearms and ammunition. Shortwave radio and CB would be a good idea, and can be used to stay in contact with your neighbors.
Keeping money stored in the banks to pay for taxes and emergency items is good, but having some of it in hard goods you can use – bought with today’s dollars – is a hedge against rising prices and a stagnant income later.
